The gift to November babies or mother’s to be can be one of two stones.  The first is Citrine, which is considered the traditional stone and the second is the Yellow Topaz, which has gained popularity.  Each of these carries a history and special lore that make the individual stone popular in its own right when added to piece of jewelry you want to make that exceptional present.

Citrine, while first worn by Romans dating all the way back to the first century B.C., became most popular amongst the trendsetters in the Romantic period.  During this time artisans favored the gem due to its ability to enhance gold jewelry.  It has been compared to the warmth of a Van Gogh painting and claimed that the gem carries the light of the sun inside itself.  As with other birthstones, it is also believed to have magical powers.  A gift of Citrine is symbolic of hope and strength, with its wearers to be wise in nature and owning a heart of gold.  It is also believe that Citrine wards off evil thoughts and cures snake venom.

Citrine, the more affordable of the two stones, gets its name from the French word for lemon, “citron.”  It is believed that some Citrine may have begun as Amethyst but heat from nearby molten rock caused it to change into the yellow form of quartz.  This theory is propagated due to the fact that Citrine can be created artificially, which is called Ametrine.  Mined naturally in Brazil, Bolivia and Madagascar, the stone has a yellow to gold to brown shade naturally.  Heated Citrine can be recognized by the dark orange-brown to reddish brown tint.

The Topaz, discovered in the Middle Ages during a quest for the supreme golden stone, is a gemstone desired my many.  It has been used in the manufacture of jewelry for centuries.  The golden-brown to yellow color is considered a classic amongst jewelers.  Topaz has been worn by royalty and clergy alike to cultivate goodwill, ward off evil spirits and physically enhance the wearer.  It was once believed that drinking powered topaz prevented insomnia, asthma and cured weak vision.

Coming from the Sanskrit word “topas,” which means fire, the Topaz occurs in a range of colors varying from pink to black.  Pure Topaz is actually colorless and the coloring transpires due to defects or changes in the stone.  Topaz, with its lively complexion, is perfect for jewelry making.  November’s birthstone is one of the more expensive versions of Topaz and highly desired.  You won’t go wrong with either of these two gemstones if you want to give that gift of hope, strength, friendship or love.
